The Palms Pharmacy Breaks Down the Confusion

September is the perfect time to check in on your heart health and at The Palms Pharmacy, we know cholesterol is one of the most misunderstood topics in wellness.

There’s a lot of confusion, fear, and outdated advice floating around. So, this month, let’s set the record straight with some common cholesterol myths vs. facts, pharmacist-style.

Myth #1: “All cholesterol is bad.”

Fact: Your body actually needs cholesterol to build cells, hormones, and vitamin D.

  • HDL (“good” cholesterol) carries cholesterol away from your arteries and back to your liver to be removed.
  • LDL (“bad” cholesterol) can build up and form plaque, increasing your risk of heart disease.

💡 The goal isn’t zero cholesterol, it’s a healthy balance between HDL and LDL.

Myth #2: “Eating foods high in cholesterol will raise my cholesterol.”

Fact: For most people, dietary cholesterol has less impact on blood cholesterol than once believed.

  • Saturated and trans fats (found in processed and fried foods) have a much stronger effect on raising LDL.
  • Heart-healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, fatty fish) can help improve your levels.

💡 Think less about eggs and more about overall eating patterns.

Myth #3: “If I feel fine, my cholesterol must be fine.”

Fact: High cholesterol has no symptoms.

  • It can silently build up over time, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • A simple blood test is the only way to know your numbers.

💡 Most adults should get screened at least every 4–6 years, or more often if you have risk factors.

Myth #4: “Medication means I failed.”

Fact: Sometimes, lifestyle changes aren’t enough on their own and that’s okay.

  • Genetics, age, and other conditions can play a major role.
  • Cholesterol-lowering medications (like statins) can lower your risk of heart attack and stroke by 25–35%.

💡 Medications are tools, not punishments. Pair them with lifestyle steps for the best results.

Myth #5: “It’s too late to improve my cholesterol.”

Fact: It’s never too late to make positive changes.

  • Even small steps like walking 30 minutes a day, eating more plants, or reducing sugary drinks can improve your numbers.
  • Changes can start showing up on labs in just a few weeks.

💡 Every choice matters and your Palms Pharmacy team is here to support you.

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 biochemical processes in the body, including muscle function, nerve health, energy production, and sleep regulation.
