January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about one

of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer when detected early. At Palms Pharmacy,

we believe that informed patients make healthier choices and education is one of the most

powerful tools we have to protect our community.

What Is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina. Most cases are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus that is spread

through intimate contact. While many HPV infections go away on their own, certain high-risk

strains can lead to cervical cancer over time if not detected and treated early.

Why Screening Matters

The good news is that cervical cancer is highly preventable with regular screening.

Two simple tests play a major role in early detection:

  •  Pap smears: detect abnormal cells in the cervix before they become cancer
  •  HPV tests: detect high-risk strains of HPV that can lead to cancer

Routine screening allows healthcare providers to identify and treat precancerous changes long

before cancer develops.

HPV Vaccination: A Powerful Tool for Prevention

The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. It protects against the high-risk HPV strains that cause most cervical cancer cases. The vaccine is recommended for preteens, teens, and young adults, but many adults who were not vaccinated earlier can still benefit.

If you or your child is unsure whether you are up to date on the HPV vaccine, our pharmacy

team can help review your immunization history and guide you on next steps.

Know the Symptoms

In early stages, cervical cancer often has no symptoms, which is why screening is so important.

As the disease progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Unusual vaginal discharge

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to contact a healthcare provider

promptly.
