As temperatures rise and Floridians spend more time outdoors, July serves as an important reminder to protect our skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV Safety Month encourages everyone to take simple steps to reduce sun exposure and lower the risk of skin damage, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Understanding UV Radiation

Ultraviolet rays are a form of invisible radiation emitted by the sun. While some sun exposure helps our bodies produce vitamin D, excessive exposure can damage the skin and increase the risk of serious health concerns.

There are two primary types of UV rays that affect the skin:

  • UVA Rays: Penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging and wrinkles.
  • UVB Rays: Affect the outer layers of the skin and are responsible for sunburns and many skin cancers.

UV rays can cause damage year-round, even on cloudy days.

Tips to Stay Sun Safe

1. Wear Sunscreen Daily

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply generously 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

2. Seek Shade

Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, typically between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when UV rays are strongest.

3. Wear Protective Clothing

Lightweight long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses provide an extra layer of protection.

4. Stay Hydrated

Hot summer temperatures can quickly lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when spending time outdoors.

5. Protect Children and Older Adults

Young children and older adults are especially vulnerable to sun-related illnesses. Be sure they stay hydrated and protected from prolonged sun exposure.

Know Your Skin

Perform regular skin checks and monitor for:

  • New or changing moles
  • Spots that itch, bleed, or do not heal
  • Changes in color, size, or shape of existing skin lesions

If you notice anything unusual, consult a healthcare provider or dermatologist.
